Letter: Davis helps keep state roads at bottom

I would like to thank Beaufort County state Sen. Tom Davis, who has single-handedly stood up for the taxpayers of our state. Davis has blocked any increase in the gas tax that would have been used to unnecessarily upgrade our wonderful road system. Why in the world would we want to improve the highways and bridges when they are so clearly a fantastic asset?

For example, Davis’ steadfastness has led to the equivalent of a stimulus program for alignment and body shops. Also, driving schools must have seen an increase in training to avoid potholes and other road dangers. I know our locals must have learned to enjoy the delays they frequently encounter on Interstate 95 and U.S. 17, to name two. We should all learn to enjoy these road delays as time to gather our thoughts and enjoy nature. There will be many more of them.

It is great leaders like Davis who have kept us where we are best: near the bottom. Why would we want to see progress that would clearly destroy our state’s historical record of looking out for the people and bringing opportunity and prosperity to all its citizens?

We can look forward to similar accomplishments in other areas, such as education and health care. After all, it has only been a little more than 150 years since the Civil War, what’s the rush? Remember, these are the people you elect and this is what your deserve.
