Letter: They think islanders are made of money

So you want to live on Hilton Head Island? Businesses and contractors seem to believe islanders lack intelligence or have more money than brains. For instance:

Recently, I requested bids for a new roof with five local companies responding; all were over $5,000 (20 percent) higher than a qualified company headquartered in Charleston.

I needed a simple cremation done here; no funeral service, no viewing, no nothing. Local funeral home: $3,200; Palmetto Cremation Society in Charleston: $650.

Eyeglass prescription refill on Hilton Head: twice the cost of same lenses at a chain store in Bluffton.

Stucco repair quotes were anywhere from three to five times higher with local contractors than other qualified contractors off-island.

This is a sad state of affairs. Sooner or later, islanders will wise up and local contractors will suffer as a result of their avarice.
