Letter: Put basics before another white elephant for the arts
It seems irresponsible that Hilton Head Island Town Council wants to push a plan on our taxpayers to fund $30 million to $65 million for an elaborate arts venue.
We currently have an under-used facility on taxpayer-assisted life support, but that’s not good enough to satisfy the arts community, which has never supported the existing facility to make it self-sustaining.
At the same time, our town can’t seem to deliver basic services to underserved areas like paved roads, water and sewer. The sewer problem is especially vexing considering the health risk to the residents of those areas and potential for sewage leeching into our waterways.
It is Town Council’s responsibility to provide basic services to all of our citizens before it attempts to build any more white elephants. Do your job!
