Letter: US needs federal term limits
Currently the American electorate is very frustrated and angry with government at almost every level, but especially at Washington, D.C. They are certainly justified, based on the Obama presidency but also by the actions of both sides of the aisle in Congress.
However, simply voicing that anger will not solve the problems. Nor will electing someone with little to no experience in governing.
For years, people other than elected officials have stated that to save American values we must invoke term limits on Congressmen and Senators. And the only way to do that, since Congress would never agree to limit terms, is by a Congressional Convention. Which, by the way, is already in process. However, it requires 34 states to agree. Thus far, five have voted for it.
Therefore, a grassroots effort is needed to obtain the other 29. South Carolina is not one of the five. Recently, presidential candidate Marco Rubio stated at a town hall meeting in Iowa, “I will put the full weight and force of the presidency behind that effort because we need term limits.”
Current elected officials will complain that invoking term limits will mean that the bureaucrats will run the government. Who do they believe is running it today? Congress passes the laws but the bureaucrats write the rules. Might we mention, as an example, the EPA?
Ask your state senator and House member where they stand on federal term limits. It may influence your vote for them in November.
