Letter: Republicans unfit to govern
A recent editorial, “Donald Trump not fit to be president,” was pitch perfect, but didn’t go far enough: The Republicans as presently constituted are unfit to govern — morally, ethically, emotionally, maturely or effectively.
I write as a one-time Republican moderate who was told in the summer of 1968 that I was no longer wanted in the party. That was the start of their decades-long spiral into an abyss. One hopes that they have reached their nadir, but I doubt it.
For more than 20 years, they have produced nothing but obstruction and inanities — shutting down government, voting once a week to repeal Obamacare, endless politicized Benghazi hearings, a looming disregard of their constitutional duties with respect to the Supreme Court vacancy. Their occasionally proffered plans are ill thought out, rife with internal contradictions, and doused with rank pandering.
Further, the party is so riven by internal strife that correcting its current paralysis would require a long period of time; they have no short-term solution. The nation as a whole has a solution, though: thoroughly reject any and all Republican candidates this fall.
True, thoughtful conservatives will find themselves having to vote for the lesser of two evils by their lights, but the Republican alternative is anarchy. Unfortunately, their base seems not to care, or is so angry that they are incapable of analyzing what courses of action are really needed and effective. What a mess the Republicans have given us.
