Letter: Cyclists will wait for oncoming traffic

With the recent closing of the U.S. 278 underpass between Palmetto Dunes and Shelter Cove on Hilton Head Island, pedestrians and cyclists are directed to detour to a pedestrian crosswalk with no traffic lights. This requires waiting for a break in traffic on U.S. 278 to cross halfway and then waiting again to cross the other two lanes.

Recently, a well-meaning motorist pulled to a stop in the passing lane to allow my husband and me to cross the westbound lanes. We looked to our right and saw the oncoming traffic coming at full speed and frantically waved the stopped car on. It was an accident waiting to happen that put all of us at risk.

Please do not stop for pedestrians and cyclists. We will wait for a break in traffic to cross safely.
