Letter: Ramp, not lights for Windmill Harbour

I read with dismay the article about traffic lights possibly being added at Windmill Harbour and the Town of Hilton Head Island being in favor of it.

While it may make it safer for residents to get in and out of Windmill Harbour and surrounding areas, it will greatly impact the other residents, workers and visitors to the island.

These lights might help 5 percent of residents but will be inconveniencing 95 percent of residents, not to mention workers and visitors.

Second, does the consultant who did the recommendation live here? Have they seen the traffic on a sunny morning or afternoon? Been here for a Saturday turnover?

Third, shame on the county and developer for not designing a proper intersection when the development was proposed. Get money from the developer.

Fourth, an underpass and eastbound ramp already exist; just build a westbound ramp. If there is enough room to widen the road, I’m sure there is enough room together with utility rights of way to construct the ramp. Just look at the flyover.

Yes, that could cost more money, but has anyone thought that the visitors (short-term renters) pay a 10 percent tax to stay on the island? This money pays for many local projects. Start making it harder to get on the island and they will go elsewhere. Let’s do the right thing.
