Letter: Hilton Head vision must be practical

The Hilton Head Island Town Council does need to pay a consultant to help with community vision because the ones proposed are ideological. What we need are some real-life, practical, imperative visions that are definite plans.

I would encourage all residents to let their ideas be known to their councilman or Mayor David Bennett.

Develop an ongoing, immediate plan to add an additional bridge to Hilton Head, or an additional two lanes with bridge repair. We need a safe, immediate way to evacuate the island and to ensure that the current bridge will be safe for the next five to 50 years. This must be No. 1. Now is the time to be sure this happens.

In addition, anyone who leaves the island already is aware of the amount of traffic and the long delays that occur.

The thousands of workers who come on to the island must be able to get here safely. All of the roads on the island must be well maintained and safe, with attractive surroundings. Residents, workers, and people who vacation deserve a safe, immediate way to come on and off the island.

The safety and well-being of our residents and those who work or visit must always be a priority.

Perhaps Hilton Head now needs its own police force or a very definite increase in what we currently have. Anyone who reads the newspaper is aware of this. Not only is road safety important, but also safety for homes, individuals and businesses.
