Letter: Local homeless must be helped
There is a 67-year-old woman living in her van in a parking lot on Hilton Head Island. What does that say about all of us? Don't we have resources to help?
I was stunned to find that the only help offered to a homeless person locally was a bus ticket to Savannah, where she could stay in a Salvation Army shelter. I have heard that the churches have a small effort, but it is not enough.
I believe that if you're not part of the solution you're part of the problem, so I am going to do whatever I can to get a shelter going. If there is anyone out there who would like to join me on this project, I would appreciate any and all help.
I will start by going to churches and the local synagogue to try and get them involved. I will also go to Deep Well and see what they are prepared to do to assist with this effort. If you would like to help in this effort, please advise me and I will be contacting you in the future when I'm able to organize all of this.
I have a busy life, but it's not so busy that I can ignore the plight of these people in need. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
