Letter: Outlaw beach fishing in the swimming areas

Your editorial ("Surf-fishing ban idea fails basic reality test") belittles the risks of shark attacks and ignores the story you published June 26.

There were two actual attacks and a third off the North Carolina shore. Admittedly, they involved tourists whose body parts and blood are clearly less valuable than those of our native residents. In your opinion, how many attacks are acceptable? Does a death justify the ban, or should it be based on a percentage of swimmers attacked?

My personal experiences in the waters off our shores strongly suggests fishing should be confined to non-swimming areas. I landed on a large weighted fishing hook abandoned in the surf while body surfing.

I watched a relative panic when swimming in an area with sharks that had been chummed by fishermen shortly before they left the beach.

I have been pushed aside by an invisible fish swimming in the murky waters.

As a result, I support the new rules and find your position ill conceived.
