Letter: County can do better with trash on holidays

On Thursday, Dec. 31, at 10:15 a.m., I lined up at the Hilton Head Island recycling center off of Dillon Road. I left after recycling all my waste articles, and passed the line of cars waiting to enter the recycling center. It stretched all the way out to Dillon Road, with some vehicles parked on Dillon Road waiting to enter the recycling center. Vehicles were parking down by the yard trash bin, and drivers were walking back up to the bins for household garbage.

This center is closed on Wednesdays, but with New Year's Day falling on Friday, the center was closed two days that week. Would it be possible to keep this center open on the Wednesdays during a week that has a holiday?

With the center open on Wednesday during a holiday week, perhaps this extra day would help cut back the long lines of vehicles that want to recycle their waste.

On Wednesdays, repair work is supposed to be done to the center's trash bins, but that Thursday, the bin next to the bin for cardboard was being repaired.

Also, I understand the workers at the center do not receive a day's pay for holidays off, so being able to work on a Wednesday of a week with a holiday in it would give their paycheck a boost.
