Letter: School board is missing main issue
Why is it that the Beaufort County school board always addresses the secondary issue and not the main issue? A good example is the ongoing discussion concerning its nepotism policy.
Nepotism would not even be under consideration if Superintendent Jeff Moss had not covertly changed the nepotism policy and then tried to cover up his actions by deceiving the school board and the community. Address the main issue first by firing Moss and then give consideration to the secondary issue.
Another example is the Moss plan to build subsidized housing for school teachers because there is a problem obtaining and retaining qualified teachers in the district. The school board loves the idea, but it is not the main issue. The main issue is teachers' wages. Pay them a fair wage, and there would be no reason for the school board to discuss the secondary issue of housing.
Maybe their next consideration will be building apartments on school campuses; providing food vouchers to the teachers; or maybe putting fold-up beds in the classrooms for the teachers to sleep at night.
I suggest the school board reduce the salaries of Moss and the other highly-paid officials in the district office by 50 percent. Then offer them subsidized housing to offset their pay cut. See if Moss or the other officials would jump at the offer. After all, what is good for the goose should also be good for the gander.
