Letter: Adopt a highway to get rid of litter
In response to the letter, "Litter on roadside needs an answer," the litter problem is not limited to "Beautiful Beaufort by the sea."
Having traveled across the state of South Carolina for the past 35 years, it's apparent that litter is everywhere. Pickup trucks and waste trucks are the worst offenders and have been observed many times spewing litter from their truck beds.
If one has ever followed a waste-hauler truck, you know how disgusting it is to see trash flying from the truck like smoke from a chimney. Likewise, some owners of pickup trucks apparently think their litter that is tossed into their truck bed just magically disappears to an obscure receptacle in gaga land.
Understanding this, our neighborhood has adopted a highway litter pick-up for a one-mile stretch leading into our development. We have a group pick-up at 8:30 a.m. on the first Saturday of each month, and it only takes about 45 minutes to clear both sides of that stretch of road.
Complaining to the county and state will get zero results, so matters have been taken into the hands of caring neighbors. The problem isn't going away by itself, and if we all don't step in to help, the litter problem will only get worse.
So, why not take the initiative to organize a neighborhood "Adopt a Highway" group?
