Letter: Abe Lincoln analogy just doesn't work

I read with interest, understanding and something that vaguely approaches agreement the letter from the writer whose ancestors were around during and possibly involved in the Civil War.

The problem with the writer's logic with respect to the restrictions to the treatment of the Confederate battle flag versus the display of the face of Abraham Lincoln on the penny and the $5 bill is that Lincoln's display does not openly attach itself to the oppression of a people whose suffering led up to the war.

And, yes, I certainly understand that the Civil War was not fought over slavery alone, but that does not eliminate the feeling that the display of the flag brings upon many. Of course the flag deserves its place in history, but that place should be less in your face.
