Letter: US liberty includes freedom of religion

I've been horrified by recent comments regarding Muslims by some of our presidential candidates, but Donald Trump's call to bar all Muslims from entering the United States is reprehensible.

It is easy to be a fair-weather American, but a true American is one who espouses American values at all times, not just when it is easy or convenient.

The Declaration of Independence states that "all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

Liberty includes religious freedom. There should be no litmus test regarding one's religion to enter the United States.

Never mind the political ramifications of such a policy; common decency dictates that we should treat all people with compassion and respect.

I hope that the views of Donald Trump do not represent the views of most Americans.

Whatever your political leanings, whether you are a Republican or a Democrat, select a candidate who represents true American values.
