Letter: Nothing wrong with opposing abortion
In response to Leonard Pitts' Monday column, I would like to stress that there is a legitimate need for pro-life activists to continue to speak up against abortion.
Equating the mainstream, mostly Republican call to defund Planned Parenthood with creating "an environment where violence against some person or group seems righteous," is biased.
Just as other social justice movements seek to raise awareness of social and moral issues, most pro-life activists and pro-life political candidates seek to show the personhood of babies who are killed legally in our country every day and advocate for change through the political process.
No matter the circumstance, it is wrong to kill another human being except in self-defense. We do not live in a world where we are exempt from hardship and difficulty. Unwanted and difficult pregnancies do not give women a moral right to abortion any more than the hardship and difficulty of motherhood give women the right to kill born children.
Disturbed individuals who commit heinous crimes in the name of the pro-life movement are not representative of the pro-life women and men who live and work here in Beaufort County.
I would argue that it is proper for us to continue to speak up against abortion instead of being bullied into silence by the abortion industry's equally adamant campaign to keep it legal.
