Letter: Address teachers' housing by raising pay

I read with great interest the latest proposal being presented by Superintendent Jeff Moss to make housing more affordable for teachers present and future.

The best way to make housing more affordable is to raise the salaries of all the teachers by $1,000 per month. Yes, that would be $12,000 per year.

In rounded terms, that would bring the average starting salary for teachers to about $42,000, which would still be below the average starting salaries for teachers in Pennsylvania, where the cost of living is less than here in Beaufort County.

This idea is not clever or innovative. It is practical and equitable, however, and just might solve the problem of teacher retention and assist in attracting quality teacher candidates to this area.
