Letter: School board forcing silent majority to roar
Let's review the Beaufort County Board of Education situation.
First the board hired a superintendent that had a North Carolina record for doing the sort of things he just did here -- a bad record for conduct but a good technical record.
Then they let him bring in his own lawyer from North Carolina to be the board attorney.
Next he causes the nepotism rules to change to enable his wife to be hired in the district office.
Then his wife is hired and the inner circle is happy until the newspaper uncovers all this and duly reports it to the public.
Then he denies knowing about his wife being interested in the job, in spite of the circumstances being similar to her hires in his previous districts.
He admits no wrongdoing, but he's sorry he caused a stir -- but more like he's sorry he got caught. The school board makes no apology at all for the bad job of screening his hire and overseeing his actions.
Now the board is unhappy because the public and press make them seem foolish and inept if not morally unfocused, so they take steps to silence dissent, only to pull back a bit after another public outcry.
How could there be any wonder why the silent majority, like me, have spoken up? I have never witnessed such fiduciary irresponsibility in my entire, long life. Where and when will it end?
