Letter: Enough has been said about Moss and board

As a subscriber, I have enjoyed for more than 12 years the investigative work done by our local paper over issues like deaths on a dangerous stretch of Interstate 95; EMS response times; and various town, county or state infrastructure plans and funding. They are strong efforts from a local newspaper with limited resources.

But the barrage of editorials over the Beaufort County Board of Education and Superintendent Jeff Moss is over the top.

Let the reconstituted school board do its job, and let them get on with the business of improving education for our kids.

Two important issues seem to be lacking from these editorials.

One, although there is no question that Moss used poor decision-making about the hiring of his spouse, it has been dealt with, including the self-removal of school board chairman Bill Evans.

Second, the editorials suggest the new board is muzzling the public with new rules. But there is no discussion about the lack of civility by the public.

We will not attract strong candidates to volunteer their time on behalf of the public without some measure of courtesy.

The public has a right to be heard, but it also should do so in a sensible and professional way. I have no problem with local boards invoking stronger rules to keep order. Consider walking in their shoes.

And it is time for this newspaper to sit on the sidelines on this matter. It has done its job.
