Letter: SC 170 construction was one big disgrace

In a gross understatement and major downplay, Beaufort County administrator Gary Kubic states that the construction delays on S.C. 170 were caused by "hiccups." How cute.

I am calling it an abortion of major proportion.

My husband was at NHC between the beginning of March and the end of May (when this project should have been completed for a long time). Several times each day, I jeopardized my life by making a left turn out of the Sun City gate closest to my home -- and in the evening, when it was dark, turning left out of the NHC property. I lost count how many times the lanes were changed and I was unsure if I was still driving in the correct lane du jour.

During rush hours and on days when I didn't feel suicidal, I took long detours to avoid life-threatening situations which, by the way, still exist today along this stretch of road, as the fatal accident on Nov. 19 shows.

After the next major precipitation event we also will know if the ditches are as efficient as the officials are making us to believe they are.

To sum it all up: The handling of the S.C. 170 project was one big disgrace. But let's be optimistic and hope that future projects are being handled more competently by a better qualified group of participants.
