Letter: Sign at rivalry game belittles faith of others

In today's society, religion is becoming more disrespected as time progresses.

I was shocked to see something at the Hilton Head Preparatory at Hilton Head Christian Academy rivalry football game on Oct. 30: a large banner saying "Let Us Prey" displayed with pride by the visiting team.

I was astounded by the sacrilegious banner and the fact that Hilton Head Prep students would take blows at someone just because of a personal belief.

As Americans, we have constitutional rights to free speech, but that doesn't justify the disrespect and personal attacks for holding different beliefs. And what's worse, the administration didn't do anything about it. They appear to support it by allowing it to be used. Guilty by association.

However, this situation isn't a single occurrence. Prep students have displayed an irreverent attitude toward Hilton Head Christian for years, evident in some attacking and vulgar outbursts on Twitter.

I'm all for school rivalry, but taking cheap shots at someone's faith is unacceptable. We're all Americans and are guaranteed freedom of religion. Let's keep it that way.
