I would like to thank Bill Evans for years of dedicated service both as an excellent principal and as chairman of the Beaufort County Board of Education. It was with great regret that I read that he had resigned his chair and position on the board. It truly is a loss to our community.
Our daughter, among many other students at Hilton Head Island High, benefited from his leadership and caring about all students succeeding. I know the parents and the community also benefited from his commitment to forming partnerships to provide a truly great learning experience.
Bill has always put the needs of students first in all decisions he has made. As former state superintendent of education, I know that he provided insightful input to our state and our community in how to make schools better. I can only believe that this was his reason for resigning. He would never want attention on him to interfere with moving our schools forward. Our schools are better than they have ever been due to his commitment and leadership.
It is always difficult to serve as a member of a school board. Some days it is without gratitude. Bill was thoughtful, knowledgeable and caring. I would suggest that we can have a civil discussion on issues without personally attacking someone's character and service. We are better than that as a community.
