Letter: Superintendent should be able to choose staff

I find it more than ironic that the very people who carp and complain about the state of affairs within the Beaufort County Board of Education -- especially Superintendent Jeff Moss -- are the very same ones who do not bat an eyelash when a football coach is hired and brings in his own "team" to coach the offensive and defensive lines, the quarterbacks, the linebackers, etc.

Not only do I believe the success of a football coach depends on his coaching staff, so too do I believe that the superintendent of schools in any district ought to be allowed to assemble his (or her) own team to administer the schools.

Having said that, my message to the carpers and complainers is simple: Exercise your constitutional right of initiative, referendum and recall. Recall the Board of Education, run for the board yourself, and once elected, fire the superintendent.

Finally, before you do, be sure to watch the movie "Lean on Me" (1989) about Joe Louis Clark, principal of a high school in Paterson, N.J., whose school runs the risk of being taken over by the state government.
