Letter: School district lawyer not a legitimate story

I was critical of Superintendent Jeff Moss' recent display of poor judgment in the hiring of his spouse, Darlene Moss. But I find your front page bold headline article in the Sunday, Sept. 27, "Moss played key role in hiring of NC attorney," a clear case of piling on.

You are attempting to link Jeff Moss' recent behavior to an action that occurred several years ago and further damage his reputation. I find that action on your paper's part to be beneath the dignity of a fair press/media outlet. If I accept as factual all of the information in your article, I find it very difficult to see what actions by Jeff Moss in the hiring of Drew Davis could be categorized as inappropriate.

Also, when all the facts you report about Drew Davis are reviewed, I don't see that his reputation should be questioned as you are attempting to do. He was not licensed in South Carolina and his contract was bought out in an old job, but these were well known by the district and the school board before his selection and approval. So where's the big story?

Your job is to report the facts, which you do quite well in the article. But not to stoke the fire brought on by the nepotism fiasco. You've chosen to do that, hoping that people will fall to your implication of impropriety.

I urge you not to be the creators of the news, just the reporters of it.
