Letter: We expected better from board chairman
Most of "we the people" know when government actions don't pass the "sniff test." In this case, the hiring of Superintendent Jeff Moss' wife is a conflict of interest that stinks to high heaven. We can smell it all the way out here on Fripp Island -- and you and the rest of your board colleagues couldn't detect the odor in the boardroom?
Fripp sends beaucoup tax dollars to the school board. Even if we don't send too many children your way, we're paying attention.
Although it's not technically forbidden, the ground rules do permit Mrs. Moss to be considered for the job after her husband "fixed" that pesky anti-nepotism impediment without informing the board. It sure looks corrupt and in most civilized jurisdictions, public officials are enjoined from even appearing corrupt.
We don't expect much from Moss; it seems he's had his scruples surgically removed. But we did expect better judgment from you. Yet, you not only went along with Moss, you defended his actions.
We trusted you to use common sense -- and all your other senses -- on the school board. We can't trust you now, and we're the people you work for, not the superintendent.
