Letter: Not all stores offer seniors their discount

Senior citizens of South Carolina are exempt from a 1 percent sales tax if they ask for it at the time of sale and show proof of being at least 85 years old (Code 12-36-2620).

Ruby Tuesday has this on a sign posted at its register, and it is printed on its receipts. Other restaurants, notably in downtown Beaufort, do not.

At one eating establishment, the owner stated that she was not aware of the rule and that it would be an accounting nightmare and she did not allow it. Another restaurant's owner said, "Give him a buck off, he's a good customer."

It appears that the law is not followed after some "no one is more important than me" state legislator displayed his talent for "getting things done."
