Rants & Raves: Crime on Spanish Moss Trail and sentences
Readers comment on the armed robbery of an 86-year-old man on the Spanish Moss Trail:
Honestly, we have been saying it's just a matter of time before someone gets targeted. ... Buddy system, always!! Lottie Campenella
So sad. After so many people worked so hard on the trail, it we be a shame if it doesn't get used because people don't feel safe. Tim Golde
Who would rob an old person??? Someone who obviously didn't have home training and if so someone obviously on drugs, and if that's not it, shame on them and what goes around comes back around to you, whether good or bad, everything you do belongs to you. Ori Afolabi
I think the next time this gentleman goes to tend to his grandson's tree that we should all as a community go line the trail for safety as a sign that Beaufort will NOT tolerate this type of violent behavior on our citizens! Brooke Johnson Jenkins
So glad he was not injured. He is a fine gentleman. I worked with him for a long time. We need to stop all of this foolishness and take our Beaufort back. Peggy Galloway Callahan
On two men convicted in the murder of Beaufort native Alex Apps, one getting life and the other 40 years:
Should have been lethal injection ... They went there with the intention of killing him ... if that's not premeditated I don't know what is ... Amanda Moberly
Wow, just wow!!! So sad for the injustice. They can plan to kill a man, kill him, and we continue to pay for them to live. I don't normally comment on things but with all going on these days this just makes me mad!!! DebraFerguson Mendenhall
We needed the death penalty on this one. Jeff Duncan
So why do we even have the death penalty? This was definitely premeditated murder. Misty Langford Shipley
On tree-cutting plans for Interstate 95's deadly Jasper County section:
Leave the trees alone! It's careless people who at fault! Man, this is crazy! Besides, accidents happen whether the wind blows or not! Stupid and unnecessary. Cecilia P. Valencia
Here come the ignorant "IT AIN'T THE TREES FAULT!" comments. You can't stop accidents, no matter how many laws you pass or how safe everyone is behind the wheel. However, you CAN make it so that there are fewer hazards on the roadside by removing large, hard stationary objects like trees. The cables work. They can be improved upon, sure, and aren't great to look at, but they work. Drew Tripp
I love how worked up people get over some trees being removed. Yes, the trees are dangerous and it's not always due to reckless drivers smacking into them. I drive this stretch of I-95 five days a week and there have been several occasions in which traffic comes to a screeching halt due to a fallen tree in the roadway. These trees are too close to the road and are not maintained or inspected on a regular basis. They need to come down. We have plenty more in this area. If you feel so bad about it, plant some in your backyard. Angela Huser
I've been so blessed to have never had a personal encounter with the killer trees. I must have a guardian watching over me! I know out of fear, many folks choose to travel through that area at speeds 15 to 20-plus miles over the posted speed limit as though running for their lives. At those speeds, when a tree comes for you there's not much you can do. Thank goodness we have the government to keep us safe from ourselves and the trees! Carrie Leasure Stanley
