How Coosawhatchie really got its name

Regarding a recent letter concerning the Coosawhatchie River, as a 67-years-old native of Coosawhatchie whose family's roots are deep in the farmland of the Okatie River, I need to set the record straight relative to how Coosawhatchie got its name. The Coosaw Indian tribe's word for river was "hatchie." Hatchie was not another tribe.

But I do appreciate the publicity. My little home village hasn't gotten much attention since Sherman burned it to the ground on his March to the Sea, and my grandmother's house burned down due to careless renters.

You reckon those renters were Yankees, too? Now, all you Sun City folks, don't get upset. Just having a little fun. We are glad you and your money have made a home in our beloved Lowcountry. God bless.
