Nancy Mace exemplifies how fidelity to Constitution outweighs political discipleship

Conscience over party

I write this to applaud our representative Nancy Mace for voting today in favor of the rule of law and our democratic process -- that no one is immune from accountability from violating the law.

It is unconscionable that 200 of her colleagues chose instead to continue to gaslight the violent insurrection of Jan 6.

I hope that she may be an example for her colleagues as to their oaths to defend the constitution. She followed her oath today.

Model UN transforms

United Nations Day, Oct. 24, celebrates the creation of the UN in 1945, and its vital mission as a world peacemaker.

Annually, the World Affairs Council of Hilton Head supports more than 100 local high school students enrolled in the Model United Nations program in Beaufort County School District.

Students are assigned a nation and research its history, politics, economy and culture. Students are then paired with a World Affairs Council member who has lived or worked in their assigned nation. Council members visit classrooms to add a real-world experience to the academic learning.

During their intensive preparation, students acquire significant skills in public speaking, negotiation, and conflict resolution. At a regional Model UN Conference, sponsored by Georgia Southern University, students role play as delegates to the UN in a mock General Assembly. World issues are presented and debated in an atmosphere of respect and civility.

Model UN is a transformative experience for high school students and is foundational to their role as a world citizen. The council applauds the administrators, teachers, and students of Beaufort County School District for their ongoing commitment to global education. It is in keeping with the Council mission of “bringing the world to Hilton Head.”

Protect what we love

Lovers of the Lowcountry, we have an opportunity to protect the place we love from the effects of climate change.

As I write this, I gaze west across a patch of marsh, then creek, then broader marsh and finally the stretch of Intracoastal Waterway between Lady’s Island and Beaufort. I don’t just enjoy this place, I need its serenity in this contentious time.

Global warming is a threat to all living things here. Our shores are low enough that every inch of sea level rise means a loss of seven feet or so of that shore. We can slow this down by reducing CO2 emissions.

This is the challenge of our time. We have the largest economy on the planet and many of the finest minds. What we need is the will.

The leaders of the Senate and President Biden are strongly considering a carbon fee and dividend provision in their reconciliation package.

This is a market-based approach that will incentivize conversion to clean power and protect middle and low income families.

The non-partisan Citizens Climate Lobby has been advocating a similar approach for years. They are joined by conservatives and thousands of economists.

Please urge President Biden and our congressional delegation to stand by a carbon fee and dividend.

Bring back toll

If you routinely drive South Carolina roads, it will not be a surprise that we rank among states with the worst roads in the country.

The Cross Island Expressway has developed multiple potholes and exceptionally wide surface separations along the center seams. This important roadway likely will continue to deteriorate.

Why allow the expressway to continue to evolve into another poor S.C. roadway? Why not resume the toll with the restriction that collections can be used only for operations and maintenance of the expressway?

The ongoing deterioration can be prevented.
