Bay Point development plan does not add up | Letters
I’ve followed the many letters published about the dangers of an Asian company developing Bay Point Island. Why is there any discussion at all about the ill-advised development proposal?
There is no benefit to Beaufort County after you weigh the value of future taxes against the liabilities of fire service, law enforcement, and the rehabilitation required after the first serious storm and the owners abandon the place.
Also, there seem to be none of the usual Beaufort development trough-feeders asking for county money.
The island will have to have some nearby jumping-off point for ferries and support craft on St. Helena or Hilton Head Island, which will resemble an industrial site.
Maybe some locals will make money there but it seems there is only one conclusion. Development of the island has an inevitable negative environmental impact, it will be a burden on county taxpayers initially and at its demise, and no one locally seems to benefit.
Plus, why should we sacrifice an important ecological gem to benefit foreign investors? So, back to my original question – why is the county even considering this debacle?
They make the rules. They enforce the rules. That should end the discussion unless there’s something afoot that none of us know.
Please investigate this quickly. Rule No. 1: If a situation doesn’t make sense, there’s always something we are not being told.

America sees through Trump
I wonder if Hans Christian Anderson is grinning down from above as he sees his famous story, “The King’s Clothiers,” playing out with our current president.
It seems a very vain man (the king) has ascended to the presidency and surrounded himself with clothiers (presidential advisors and sycophants) who spin such tales that allegedly only the most intelligent and trustworthy can see. The president then parades (texts) about showing off his cleverness, which only the most astute will understand.
But finally from the crowd a small voice is beginning to be heard: “This is not intelligence, this is not meaningful, this is not based in reality – for the president is saying nothing at all. The president speaks without meaning or truth – he is naked of the facts.”
The crowd now hears this small voice and the voice grows, it gathers momentum (election): “For the king is naked – he is not intelligent nor astute. The president has nothing to say.”
The king (president), now unelectable, disappears as the crowds realize what a mistake this king has been.
Hans grins, then chuckles to himself.

They’re lying about Mace
I am beyond disappointed in the lies all over the media today. I recently saw that some Washington, D.C., group is spending thousands of dollars to hijack our political process here in the Lowcountry by lying about Republican Nancy Mace, saying that she supports offshore drilling. She doesn’t.
I love our beautiful beaches here and I would never support any candidate who would consider ruining them.
Nancy Mace leads the Republican opposition to offshore drilling and has a perfect score with conservation groups based on her votes on this issue in the state House.
Joe Cunningham and this group that has funneled hundreds of thousands of dollars into his campaign in 2018 and this year against Mace has to know how Mace feels about this issue because she was standing at a stop-drilling event with Joe Cunningha.
She doesn’t just talk the talk about conservation, she walks the walk. She does what she says. This group needs to stop lying.
