Squire Pope park on Hilton Head a bad option for Daufuskie ferry dock | Letters
I read your recent article on the search for a new location for the county’s Daufuskie Island ferry with interest. I didn’t realize that one of the top choices was Squire Pope Community Park on Hilton Head Island.
The article mentions the potential negatives of this location, because of its proximity to U.S. 278 and Windmill Harbour. But more importantly, I think, is that this road leads to the secondary entrance to Hilton Head Plantation, where about one-third of the island lives. I can’t imagine the traffic problems if the ferry is located off this same road.

How Trump truly defines America’s greatness
President Donald Trump is making America great again.
Not because he has managed to keep the pace of job, economic, and stock market growth that President Barack Obama had, but because of the impeachment.
In the other corrupt dictatorships Trump seems to court, the press is jailed or “disappears.” In the USA, Trump merely tries to denigrate their search for the truth. Here, critics are not crushed, merely called names.
Here, the president and his followers can lie to their heart’s content, but the media can call them on it and prove they are lying.
Here, the president can call on his followers to injure his critics, but when they do, laws and agencies exist to prevent or investigate criminal activity and bring the perpetrators (unfortunately not the instigators) to justice.
Here, our officials shouldn’t exchange political favors for personal benefit, but ethics committees, the legislative bodies, the media, and the courts can investigate, report on, and bring them to justice when they break the law and the public’s trust.
So, while we had some reputation for ethical and moral leadership in the world, those who still look up to us will know that when our democracy is being threatened by those inside and outside our borders who want to take power away from the majority of our citizens, the basic democratic principals of free speech, rule of law and balance of power still exist to help preserve our democracy.
And in that strange way, Trump deserves credit for proving the greatness of America.

Cunningham’s op-ed was a campaign speech
Regarding U.S. Rep. Joe Cunningham’s op-ed on voting for the impeachment of President Donald Trump:
He should save his campaign speeches for the next election. The disinfecting nature of the sun will be shining brightly on the House of Representatives that day.

Impeachment changes my vote
U.S. Rep. Joe Cunningham said that voting with his party on impeachment of President Donald Trump would be difficult. He can decide if voting against his party or with it is more difficult. I can’t change my vote when he ran, but he wants to change mine when I voted for the president.

People need food stamps
Recently, I was checking out in my favorite supermarket, and the clerk said, “Did you find everything you wanted, Fran?”
I answered, “Yes, but I couldn’t get all I wanted. President Donald Trump cut my food stamps in half, and they say he’s cutting us more, cutting out for 700,000 people.”
Sadly, the lady behind me said, “Well, they are only cutting out people who don’t deserve the food.”
I was stunned. Was she implying I didn’t deserve to eat?
I passed inspection. The federal government declared me disabled after I was severely beaten in spousal abuse, but you don’t see that. I might look like a healthy 81-year-old.
I do get a tiny bit of Social Security, but most goes to where I live. She doesn’t know my story or that of anyone on food stamps, many of whom are young children. Actually, they are cutting the food stamp part of the Farm Bill, so they can give subsidies to farmers, even those who live in cities and just receive checks. This is to partly make up for the loss of sales in Trump’s trade deals. But I don’t think that should take food from the mouths of the hungry. Do you?
