US needs the Dreamers | Letters
On Nov. 15, the U.S. Supreme Court heard the case brought by the Trump administration to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), better known as the Dreamers.
The program, began in 2014 by President Barack Obama, sought to protect these young people from deportation via executive order. These individuals were brought to the U.S. at very early ages through no fault of their own and were raised and educated in the school systems of our state and nation.
The positive impact of this program for almost 800,00 people is profound. DACA has resulted in over 90% of the recipients going to school and/or working. This means more educational attainment, more tax monies (the program costs less than it benefits the nation), safer communities, and lower deficit rates.
The American public supports the Dreamers and a path to citizenship by over 75% in national polls, including the vast majority of conservatives.
The Lowcountry of Hilton Head Island/Bluffton/Beaufort is home to over 600 Dreamers and there are close to 6,000 in the state of South Crolina.
If the court were to move agasinst DACA, it would mean a poential loss of over $60 billion in GDP over a 10-year period, according to the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy.
Should the court rule against DACA, it would be up to the Congress and president to finally legislate comprehensive immigation reform, including the Dreamers.
Let us hope that, whatever the decision, these young people can finally achieve their American dream.

Trump fights for America
This is the first time in my life of 77 years that we have had a witchhunt like this against our president.
Let’s look at the previous eight years before President Donald Trump was elected, and the corrupt administration and what they got away with. Eric Holder in “Fast and Furious”; Hillary Clinton and Benghazi; John Kerry, a commie from Vietnam; and the almighty attorney general who lied on the tarmac and was caught.
Soldiers like U.S. Army 1st Lt. Clint Lorance, who did his job, was sent to prison and his family suffered, as well as others wrongfully charged, but they were finally pardoned by our president.
We finally have a president who is fighting for America and not against her. We have someone who loves and cares for our troops, and finally we have a leader who is standing up to Russia, China and Iran and who is trying to to rebuild our military.

Ask first about utility supply lines
I have owned a home serviced by water, gas and electric utilities for 44 years in two different states and have yet to experience damage to their lines on my property.
Somewhere back there someone came up with supply-line insurance using a bit of scare tactics. I am sure that in the unlikely event they have a claim it would be covered. Before signing to pay a small sum each month, check around and ask how many of your friends and neighbors ever experienced damage to supply lines.
