Andy Rooney’s better way for ‘resignation’

The departure of the EPA head Scott Pruitt made me think of the words of Andy Rooney, who for years gave wonderfully insightful one-minute commentaries at the end of TV’s “60 Minutes.”

In one program in 1983, considering some of the “resignations” of individuals during the Reagan presidency, Rooney wrote with prescience:

“We’re so used to hearing things we know aren’t true in our lives — in advertising, in political speeches, everywhere. We’re even used to friends saying they’re just fine when we know they’re sick. We’re even used to everyone not saying quite what they mean. But wouldn’t it be nice if just once the president of the United States caught someone doing something wrong and said, ‘You! Out! Pick up and leave, and don’t give my name as a reference. You’re fired.’ ”
