Here’s how US should spend those billions for border wall

Our problems at the southern border are not easily solved in an ethical and moral manner, and in my estimation, an expensive border wall is not the answer.

Would it do any good? Of course, it would do some good. But it would do nothing to fix the root cause of the current exodus from Central American countries like Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. These countries, and others, have failed to provide safety and a working economy for their citizens, and until that is fixed, immigrants will continue to face the long odds of finding safe haven in the USA.

Gang violence in these countries makes safe living impossible and is driving people away in desperation. How ironic that MS-13 and Barrio 18 began life in Los Angeles and then found a foothold south of the border.

Money spent on the wall, minimally priced at $30 billion, would go a long way, if not all the way, toward stabilizing these struggling countries and eradicating the gangs. I am not sure how such a rebuilding program should be structured, but it should not amount to simply giving money to these countries, as corruption would quickly dissipate the impact.

The rebuilding alternative to the wall merits investigation before we spend massive amounts on a wall that would only be a superficial Band-Aid.
