Charge Beaufort County developers with impact fees for new schools

In 2016, the South Carolina legislature changed state law to enable school districts to receive impact fees from new development to pay for school construction.

The Post and Courier in Charleston reported late last year that the Fort Mill School District in the rapidly-growing town near Charlotte is taking advantage of the opportunity. It gets $2,500 for each new house and apartment built, and in a recent year collected a total of $4.2 million, the paper reported.

So the question becomes: Why is the Beaufort County Board of Education insistent on supplementing fast growth here by imposing tax increases on the residents, instead of putting the burden of growth where it belongs?
