Safety a must on U.S. 278 on Jenkins Island

Recently there have been more than 75 accidents and a countless number of near-accidents on Jenkins Island. All residents on Jenkins Island, including Windmill Harbour, and those drivers passing through daily deserve the right of a safe passage.

For nearly 15 years, the state, Beaufort County and residents of Jenkins Island have spent substantial time and effort discussing, planning and implementing temporary solutions. The current project takes all these efforts to the next level. This project will allow residents of Jenkins Island safe access to U.S. 278, and those driving through a safer and faster passage.

We are grateful for the Hilton Head Island Town Council’s support for this project with its approval Tuesday evening. However, there is much more to do between Moss Creek and the Squire Pope Road intersections. I hope the rest of the work can be done in a timely and urgent manner.
