Beaufort County Treasurer’s Office slow on refund
In late November, I received my property tax bill and submitted a check on Dec. 4, 2017, which was deposited by the Beaufort County Treasurer’s Office on Dec. 8.
About the same time, I received a corrected bill stating that my previous installment payment had not been posted and any overpayment would be refunded in three to four weeks. This overpayment was more than $500.
On Dec. 20, I contacted the treasurer’s office to ask about the refund and was told that due to the end-of-year closeouts and the holidays, the check would come about Jan. 15. On Jan. 17, I was told it had to clear the Finance Committee and I might see it the following week.
As I write, it is Jan. 25 and still no check has arrived. This was the treasurer’s error, but no effort has been made to correct it.
I will not continue in the installment-payment program run by Beaufort County and would like to warn others to be aware of this unsatisfactory situation.
