How to answer Beaufort County school district questions

Poring over the countless articles, stories and emails about the Beaufort County Board of Education, I feel it’s important to remind people that the Beaufort County Council has zero to do with how the Beaufort County School District spends its money.

The only thing we control is setting and approving the millage rate for its operations budget.

I came out with a proposed resolution several months ago referencing the continuing saga of allegations of corruption with their procurement card system. It asked for a full, separate and external audit to be performed to either quench these allegations, or find and punish the guilty.

Apparently, there are some people who either forgot that, or just don’t understand it. A full, separate and external audit is not a full-on forensic audit, which in this case could cost taxpayers upwards of $500,000. It is an audit performed by local CPA’s, attorneys, etc. They perform their task, and if blatant wrongdoing is found, then a full forensic audit should be performed.

Let’s stop the name-calling, accusatory libel and outright disregard for professional courtesy. That will get us nowhere, and problems will never be solved.
