Letters to the Editor

Charitable donations should be for personal reasons, not for itemizing

I read with interest a recent letter regarding the potential negative impact that the recently-enacted federal tax legislation may have on previously but no longer itemizable charitable contributions.

I would add that the individual tax savings that previously resulted from itemizing charitable contributions could also be interpreted as taxpayers’ involuntarily subsidizing charitable contributions to nonprofit organizations that would not otherwise merit my or their contribution.

Charity begins at home, and that’s where it should stay.
