Letters to the Editor

Life in America is suddenly bewildering

Next September, I will have lived three-quarters of a century. I have felt reasonably comfortable with what I considered to be the reality of my existence. There were “good people” and “bad people.” The goods didn’t always defeat the bads, but usually things worked out. People had different beliefs, philosophies, religions. Sometimes they argued and even killed over these.

We elected a Congress to represent us. Usually it did. The political parties had differences, but these differences usually were contained within the parameters laid out in our guiding light, the Constitution.

Now, bewilderment consumes me.

Donald Trump is president. He and his minions act decisively each day using the executive branch to dismantle our ordered protective society. We have a Congress originally designed to be a check and balance on chicanery in the executive branch, also charged with promoting policy and passing laws representing reasonable desires of we the people. Now the majority promotes the well-being of themselves and their donors.

My most bewildering dilemma arises from Americans’ inability to see what we are losing at the hands of these charlatans: our freedoms, our rights, our safety; our chance to live better each day. Some still support Trump and the actions of this Congress. Are they blind, or consumed by personal bigotries? Some propose that we will solve the problems with next November’s elections.

What makes them think fair and untainted elections will take place?

Bewilderment prevails.
