Hilton Head future can be brighter
Hilton Head Island is the first place I have lived where I want to put down roots, despite the fact I am an outlier in all aspects of the island median statistics.
I am one of those young professionals who has made it here, in a sense. I moved to a No. 1 island with pristine beaches, trees, miles of bike paths and lots of exclusive, gated communities. Sounds perfect for some, and partially for me, at least the natural aspects.
To me, there is a lack of community here, which is glaring compared to places like downtown Bluffton. “Why don’t you move there if it’s so much better?” I have been scolded. Well, because there is hope for the island.
When I found out about the town’s “Our Future” program, I applied to participate. What I found was an incredibly organized and thoughtful forum for citizens to be heard with the year 2040 in mind.
I am encouraged to hear there are residents islandwide with great and plausible ideas for the future, and that I am not alone in my perceptions. If you check the community survey statistics on the program website, it is apparent. I encourage everyone to do just that. See for yourself. I thank the town for giving me a chance to be heard. Let’s make it happen.
