Hilton Head visioning process a breath of fresh air
I recently attended a think tank workshop for a town initiative called “Hilton Head Island: Our Future.” It’s an amazing undertaking, and sorely needed.
It was a breath of fresh air for myself and for the entire island. The moderator gave us results from recent surveys and town hall meetings with hundreds of islanders, showing a surprising level of general agreement about new collective visions and directions for the island over the long-term. This review session was followed by several small-group brainstorming sessions that focused on specific areas of needs and improvements.
The think tank process included a large, very diverse audience that deeply cares about Hilton Head’s success and quality-of- life. It was an open, objective and honest exercise with pragmatic and practical suggestions coming from the attendees.
It’s a long and difficult process, and it’s not easy to please everyone, but it’s good for Hilton Head, good for Town Council, our Planning Commission, our town staff and all stakeholders and citizens alike. Congratulations to Emily Sparks, David Ames and others leading this critically-needed approach to examining our future.
