Everyday citizens shining lights of hope
It is not difficult to become depressed with the many dysfunctional institutions that govern and control our lives today. It’s tempting to declare it irreparable and hopeless.
However, your Sunday, Dec. 10 Opinion page offered a heartening array of American citizens — some in government — who will not allow our country to fade into chronic dysfunction. The events, initiatives, and proposals portrayed on that Opinion page reflect the “power of the people” to call out, address, remediate, and try to correct issues when their municipal, state, and national governments fail to do so.
When so much is going wrong, it’s helpful to remember the legion of local efforts, such as Hopeful Horizons — a non-profit run by Shauw Chin Capps to assist children and victims of domestic violence and rape and how much they need our support. These organizations aid our fellow citizens who might otherwise fall through the cracks.
Agree with these causes or not, this is our society at its most vibrant and noble — initiative and action from everyday citizens who care enough to challenge the status quo and work for change and solutions when it feels that our government has disparagingly let us down. This spirited stand for justice, foresight, and caring is something all American citizens can still be proud of.
