Doesn’t the truth still matter?
Does it matter — telling the truth?
We always want the truth. We ask ourselves all the time, “Is it true?” Yes, it matters; it matters a great deal.
When we buy stuff, does truth in advertising count? Does it count on nutrition labels? You bet. U.S. citizens have killed political careers over lying. How many of you remember Donna Rice and U.S. Sen. Gary Hart? We really didn’t care if he was having an affair with her. What mattered — what killed his career — was that he lied to the press denying he was having an affair.
We want the truth. We would easily forgive the sinner, but, “Don’t lie to me!!”
My concern now is what has happened to us recently? Why do so many ignore the lying instead of drawing the line that says “Stop!” No further. The truth still matters, doesn’t it? Don’t you want the truth? Your personal integrity demands the truth, doesn’t it?
In the future, let us hope for more truth and less lying. Let’s test the lies and find the truth. Let us stop the rumors and gossip by not spreading it; don’t repeat it unless you personally know it’s true. Our society will be the better for it.
