Plant palmettos in I-95 median

Driving to Charleston from Bluffton on Friday, Dec. 1, my husband and I noticed the “rape of the land” is progressing along the median of Interstate 95 in Jasper and Colleton counties.

We have lived in the Hilton Head Island area for 21 years, and love the beauty of all the trees.

It appears to me that the trees have not caused the vehicle wrecks of late, but careless drivers going too fast, or ones who fell asleep or were distracted by electronic devices.

When all of the natural debris is hauled away, I do hope the S.C. Department of Transportation will replace it with the official state tree, the sabal palmetto. It’s something to consider.
