16 tips for Beaufort County school board members

In Pennsylvania, I served on a school board and vocational-technical board for 12 years.

Here are some thoughts from that experience:

1. The school board is the instrument the community creates to oversee the operation of the schools.

2. Parents put their trust in the elected board to do what’s best for their students.

3. The superintendent reports to the board, and the board reports to the community. The board is the superintendent’s boss; not the other way around.

4. The school board member must be willing and committed to spend the time and do the work.

5. They are there to serve — both the school and the community.

6. It’s OK to listen.

7. Occasionally, a good thought comes from another board member.

8. A good idea is a good idea, regardless of the source.

9. It’s better if you are civil, considerate and respectful.

10. Sometimes, compromise is necessary — not a sign of weakness.

11. Team-building would help members understand each other’s point of view.

12. Don’t show up at a meeting angry, ready to fight.

13 Leave your personal agenda at home.

14. Show up, on time and be ready to work and contribute.

15. Not every issue is “a hill to die on.”

16. You are privileged to serve on the board. Do it honorably.
