Southern heritage must include all heritage
Denmark Vesey and Nat Turner, neither of whom took an oath to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, planned or carried out rebellions against an intolerable system and were executed. The leaders of the Confederate States of America, many of whom took the oath, rebelled against the United States and have been deified. Food for thought.
Perhaps a different perspective would help ameliorate our understanding of this historical conundrum.
Southern heritage includes all of the diverse groups that inhabited the 19th century South. It is not the exclusive domain of any one group and should be remembered and taught as such.
