Gun ownership a basic human right
A recent letter referred to gun ownership as a privilege, i.e. a special right, favor, etc., granted to some person or group. The grantor in this case is government.
The possession of weapons is absolutely necessary for both self- and collective defense against criminal behavior and the actions of tyrannical despots. Those who define gun ownership for self defense as a privilege granted by government and not a basic human right are siding with those who would take away this basic right that protects life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as enshrined in our founding documents as basic human rights given by the Creator.
One of the first objectives of totalitarian takeover is the disarming of the populace. One of the first battles of the American Revolution was over a British attempt to seize a militia’s armory.
This is not to say that there should not be reasonable legislation in the matter. The problem is that the bad guys don’t care about laws. Most of the laws and restrictions proposed by progressives effectively disarm the law-abiding while letting the criminals run amok.
The left’s ultimate goal is the confiscation of the very thing that protects a basic human right — not a privilege conferred by government subject to withdrawal with a change of administration. Universal registration can easily lead to universal confiscation.
