Make U.S. 278 intersections safer

My heart breaks for the young school teacher and unborn child who were killed at Buck Island Road and U.S. 278 as well as the others injured.

I drive U.S. 278 to Hilton Head Island and back each day and notice the turn signal lights at a lot of the intersections blink yellow as opposed to giving a protected turn. Why?

Many times I thought I would contact someone to see if that could be changed as it is such a dangerous situation. I realize that one of the driver’s indicated her car stalled when making the turn but if she had been turning on a green arrow, there would not have been any oncoming traffic and lives would have been saved.

I think we need to get the message out to those who control these signals that we want the protected turn signal put back in place. The folks to contact are Beaufort County Traffic & Transportation Engineering and they can be reached at 843-255-2940.
