Be aware of ‘grandson in jail’ scam
Please make your readers aware that the scam is in full swing where your “grandson” calls to tell you he is in trouble and asks you to send money to get out of jail.
I received such a call and almost fell for it. Although all the alarm bells in my brain were ringing, I went along to see if there really was any trouble.
When I told my “grandson” that I did not know how to proceed with sending money, I was connected with a “Sgt. Davis.” At that point — to buy time — I made an excuse about my sick husband needing attention and asked if I could call back, and I was given a telephone number. I used the time to call my grandson, the Sheriff’s Department, etc., but was not very successful.
Then “Sgt. Davis” called back and offered to help me send the money. But when he asked my grandson’s last name, I said, “Wait a minute, you have arrested him, and you don’t know his last name?”
At that point “Sgt. Davis” said, “Look lady, I know what you are doing ... this is a scam, and you are stringing me along! I make my living with lying, so I know when I am being lied to! Do you think I am a (expletive) idiot?”
I was speechless and hung up.
Anyway, I thought it would be a good thing to make your readers aware that this scam is still going.
